What these standards cover

These standards apply to what you add to Fathom Finch that other boaters can see: your display name, username, bio and profile photo, your boat’s name and home port, and the photos and captions you upload.

Keep it family-friendly

Families use Fathom Finch to plan trips. So we don’t allow:

• Sexual content, nudity, or sexualised pictures of anyone
• Graphic violence, gore, or pictures of serious injury
• Hate speech, slurs, or attacks on people for who they are
• Harassing or targeting a particular person
• Encouraging or explaining self-harm
• Encouraging or explaining illegal activity
• Spam, link-farming, or advertising unrelated to your own boat or business
• Pretending to be another person, a business, or Fathom Finch

That isn’t a rule against personality. Salty language in a bio, a strongly negative opinion about a marina, and a boat name that’s a pun are all fine. Where it’s genuinely unclear whether something crosses the line, a person looks at it rather than it being removed.

How what you post is reviewed

When you add something, it’s checked automatically. If nothing is flagged, it appears straight away. Anything the check isn’t sure about, or can’t finish checking, waits for a person to look at it, and isn’t shown to other boaters until they do.

Only a person ever rejects what you post. The automatic check can hold something back for review, but it can’t turn it down.

If something you post is turned down

We’ll tell you it didn’t meet these standards. We won’t list which rule it broke in detail, because a precise description of what gets caught is a guide to getting around it.

Reporting something

If you see a photo, a boater’s profile or a video that breaks these standards, use the Report link beside it. You’ll need to be signed in, so that a person stands behind every report.

A report doesn’t remove anything by itself. A person reviews it against these standards and decides. The boater who posted it isn’t told who reported it.

You can also block a boater from their profile. Blocking hides their profile and photos from you. It only changes what you see: it doesn’t tell them, and it isn’t a report.

Threats and illegal material

Content that threatens violence against someone, or that may be illegal — above all, any sexual content involving a minor — isn’t handled like an ordinary report. It’s preserved rather than deleted, kept out of public view, and escalated to a named person at Fathom Finch. We may suspend the account that posted it while it’s reviewed.

If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services first.

Disagreeing with a decision

If we’ve taken action on your account, you can see why and appeal on your account standing page. An appeal is never decided by the person who made the original decision, and the outcome is recorded with its reasons either way.

How long we keep turned-down photos

A photo that’s turned down is deleted 30 days later, unless we have to keep it — for example, under a legal hold. The record that a decision was made, and who made it, is kept.
